What is Depression?

Depression is a common occurrence causing individuals to experience intense feelings of sadness, lose interest in things that once brought them joy leading to a variety of emotional and physical issues that may interfere with one’s quality of life. It is estimated that over 17 million adult Americans suffer from depression that likely started in their teen years.

Differing from sadness and grief/bereavement, depression results from a variety of factors. Depression can occur based on a combination of biochemistry, genetics, as well as environmental factors. Regardless of the origin or cause of depression, this condition can be treated and managed.

What are common symptoms of Depression?

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed

  • Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting

  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much

  • Loss of energy or increased fatigue

  • Feelings of worthlessness

  • Feelings of hopelessness

  • Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., inability to sit still, or pacing,) or slowed movements or speech (these actions must be severe enough to be observable by others)

  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions

  • Irritability

  • Thoughts of death or suicide
